GAFFNEY — A burglary suspect from North Carolina has been arrested after he tried to thumb a ride from a South Carolina sheriff.

Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller says 20-year-old Samuel Ebon Ledford of Shelby, N.C., was arrested Thursday and charged with first-degree burglary.

Earlier Thursday, deputies responded to a burglary after a man returned home and found people loading his things into a car. All three suspects got away.

Mueller says he was searching for the suspects when he saw Ledford trying to hitchhike about a mile from the home.

Ledford said he had been at a party and was walking to his girlfriend's house in Gaffney. But Mueller says Ledford admitted he had been part of the burglary after he was caught lying about the party location.
