Marine lieutenant colonel dies at NC camp

CAMP LEJEUNE — A U.S. Marine lieutenant colonel was two days away from assuming command of a school at Camp Johnson has died after collapsing during a physical fitness test.

A statement from Camp Lejeune says Lt. Col, Andrew P. Reed died Friday during the run portion of the semi-annual fitness test. The cause of Reed's death is under investigation.

Reed was scheduled to assume command on Monday of Logistics Operations School at Camp Johnson.

The 39-year-old Reed served in combat operations during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2004 and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005 and 2006 as an assistant logistics officer with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit.

Lt. Col. Michael J. Monroe, the current commanding officer of Logistics Operations School, will remain in command.
