Mayor in High Point says unpaid bills not a reason to step down
HIGH POINT — The mayor of High Point says there is no reason for her to step down.
Mayor Bernita Sims responded Monday to critics who have said she should resign because of questions about her personal finances.
Four city council members have said an investigation into Sims' handling of a family member's estate, as well as unpaid state income taxes and an unpaid city utility bill have undermined public confidence in the city.
Sims said the issues raised are personal matters that have nothing to do with her job.
The council members say Sims has not done enough to explain the issues.
Sims says the negative attention her financial problems have brought has been the result of media coverage.
