Women rally against abortion bill
RALEIGH — Activists are telling North Carolina lawmakers they will fight legislation requiring doctors who provide abortions to have admitting privileges at a local hospital.
About 200 women, and some men, turned out Wednesday for a rally called "Not in Her Shoes" at Halifax Mall near the Legislature. The women said the slogan means male legislators will never know what it's like to walk in a woman's shoes.
Democratic Rep. Deborah Ross said the bill is part of a larger war on women that includes a rejection of federal dollars to expand Medicaid and a proposal to require photo identifications for voting. She says both issues disproportionately affect women.
The bill also requires any physician performing an abortion to remain with the patient through the procedure and recovery.
