Support, spectator viewing welcomed for polar plunge
Registrations that will include a T-shirt have passed, but support for the Special Olympics of Vance County can still be made at Saturday’s polar plunge into Kerr Lake.
The annual jump into the lake takes place at 9:30 a.m. near the Satterwhite Point Glass House. All proceeds and donations from the event will go to help maintain year-round training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
The inaugural event in 2013 raised more than $3,000 above event costs. Business sponsorships were added for the T-shirts this year.
Emergency personnel will be hand for safety, and participants have been encouraged to take precautions and determine if they are healthy enough for plunging into frigid water.
Symbolic dips of the toe or foot are also welcome as a sign of support to Special Olympics.
Organizers confirm the event goes on rain or shine. Saturday’s forecast is for lows near 31 degrees and highs in the mid-50s, with rain very possible.
