Board to convene, ready to move on fiscal discussion

A budget work session will be presented Monday evening by Steve Graham, finance officer for Vance County Schools during a called meeting of the Board of Education.

Graham says matters discussed will pertain to the budget request package due for submission to the county.

“We’re in the position now to get a budget request package to submit to the county for their consideration,” Graham said. “On Monday afternoon, at that point I will be presenting the full budget request package to our board for them to consider.”

Vance County School board members will be given the opportunity to look over the budget request package until their next board meeting on Monday, May 13, when approval will be given or denied.

“That way when we have the meeting on Monday, they’ve had ample opportunity to review the package and discuss matters with us regarding any concerns they may have,” Graham said. “So, it moves things along on the Monday night session.”

Budget work session items will include revenue projections for state, federal, and local funding.

“Our revenue won’t be defined until the end of June or into July,” Graham said. “Our goal now at this point in time is to determine what our needs are in order to continue our operations.”

According to Graham, allowing county officials to review and deliberate on the school system’s budget request package puts them in a position to determine what type of funding they will provide for the 2013-2014 fiscal year, beginning July 1.

“They’ll be in a better position to know what kind of funding they’ll be able to provide us,” Graham said. “Then as we get into August and September, we’ll know our revenues, state, local, and federal.”

Once revenues have been determined, Graham says an initial budget can be provided, typically ready for approval by September or October.

A bid awarded for the renovation of science labs at Northern Vance High School is an additional agenda item listed for board action during Monday night’s called meeting.
