Two apprehended in Warren County murder
A man died after being transported from the scene of a shooting Tuesday night at a gas station near Interstate 85 in Warren County, according to Sheriff Johnny Williams.
Soon after hospital authorities pronounced Royvitt Fortson, 41, of 115 Freedom Circle, Norlina, dead at Maria Parham Medical Center, a Virginia deputy spotted a vehicle fitting the description near the Virginia state line.
“(Fortson) was shot at the BP, at 927 Oine Road, at about 9:30 p.m.” Williams said. “We received a description of a vehicle that left the scene at the BP.”
He added that shortly before midnight a Mecklenburg County, Va., deputy spotted a vehicle of that description at the Wise exit area from I-85, at about mile marker 233.
“There was no chase,” Williams said. “The deputy notified us and followed the vehicle south on Interstate 85.”
State troopers, Vance and Warren county deputies and a unit from the Henderson Police Department assisted in stopping the vehicle about 10 miles south of the Wise exit, just inside the Vance County line, Williams said.
He added that the stop took place without incident, and police questioned a man and woman detained from the vehicle as persons of interest in the investigation.
“We took them to the sheriff’s office for questioning,” Williams said.
Williams said information on injuries to the victim is preliminary.
“We haven’t received a report from the autopsy,” he said.
Williams said that he and his investigators, with help from the SBI, worked through the night and all day Wednesday to piece together what happened.
He added that he would not be releasing the names of the detainees described as “persons of interest,” or other details on the incident, pending further investigation.
“I can confirm that we do have a murder,” Williams said. “It was a gunshot wound. I do not know at this time where the victim was struck or if there was more than one shot.”
The Oine Road BP is off of the I-85 exit at mile marker 229.
