Service activity, speakers scheduled
Community members have been invited to take part in a volunteer workday in the Warren County High School garden on Monday to celebrate a Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. On entering the school at 149 Campus Drive, participants can follow the signs to the garden.
Project coordinator Caroline Stover, a service member of FoodCorps, said students and community volunteers will be making raised beds for plants, building a gate to the garden and doing general cleanup.
FoodCorps is a nationwide organization designed to connect kids to real food to help them grow up healthy.
Stover is working with a core group of about 15 ninth-graders to develop a greater appreciation for the value of fresh garden produce.
“We’ve worked with different classes,” she said.
For example, a geometry class helped lay out the square footage of the garden. A food teacher helped them harvest vegetables and cook them.
In addition to volunteers working in the garden, the event will host students from other schools to introduce them to gardening.
Stover invites volunteers from the community to share their gardening skills with the students. The students will respond by sharing their knowledge with the volunteers.
Volunteers can help also by bringing their gardening tools for the event. A donation of canned goods, to be contributed to Loaves and Fishes, is encouraged.
Those interested in participating are asked to RSVP by calling Stover at (336) 287-1620.
Also Monday in connection to the federal holiday, Spring Street Baptist Church on 511 Orange Street in Henderson will host a breakfast at 8 a.m. Rev. Carson Foster Jones Jr. is the featured speaker.
And in Oxford, Dr. Benjamin Chavis Jr. will be the speaker at a 5 p.m. event in the Northern Granville Middle School auditorium.
In Littleton at 9:30 Monday morning, a parade will begin at the Lakeland Cultural Arts Center, followed by a noon event in the Oak Groave Baptist Church with featured speaker Dr. C.E. McCollum.
