Sexual assault arrest made

A bystander helped a woman call police for help and Henderson police made an arrest for a sexual assault in a matter of minutes Thursday afternoon.

Lt. Chris Ball said a 50-year-old woman was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries after the attack. The incident happened just before 2:30, Ball said, when the woman was confronted by a black male with a firearm and forcibly removed from the street.

An investigation is ongoing, including to see if the suspect, whose name is yet to be released, has connection to any other reported sexual assaults. Police and sheriff’s deputies responded to one each on Feb. 14 and no arrests have been made in either case to date.

“She flagged down someone who made the call,” Ball said of how police were able to get the call.

Sheriff’s deputies also responded, with about a dozen law enforcement cars converging on the scene near Thomas and Young Street. Police had crime scene tape up at a culvert on both sides of Young Street.

Within minutes, at least one car left with emergency lights engaged. Ball said the suspect, a black male with dreads, was arrested at Parham and Arrow streets.

Emergency first responders were on Thomas Street before transporting the woman to the hospital.
