Community session takes aim at depression in older adults

An informational session concerning depression in the elderly will take place at Perry Memorial Library in Henderson from 3:30-5 p.m.

“Get Connected: Keeping a Healthy Outlook on Life – Mental Health Issues and Older Adults” will be presented in an effort to inform community members about the signs of mental illness in senior and assist seniors in connecting to resources. Information on differentiating between symptoms of mental illness and the effects of normal aging will be discussed. Topics will include: common symptoms of mental disorders and effective treatments; overcoming shame and isolation; the effect of a physical conditions on a person’s mental health; and the harmful effects of medications and alcohol.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is providing educational materials.
