The Honorable Judge Carolyn Yancey was invited to speak to members of the Emerging Young Leaders program during their recent meeting at the Richard Thornton Library in Oxford. The theme for this meeting was “Celebrating Women.”

Yancey discussed her pursuit of her dreams and the personal journey that ensued. She urged the attendees to maintain their focus and avoid distractions from other people. She encouraged them to search for something they enjoy doing and then contemplate ways they might pursue it.

Then, group members related their future career plans to her.

Following Diane Evans’ discussion of non-traditional careers, members of the Nu Chi Omega Oxford/Henderson Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha holding such occupations shared information with program members. The chapter sponsors the Emerging Young Leaders program.

Sandra Bullock, SEMA coordinator at Northern Granville Middle School, discussed the benefits of that program. LaRhonda Harris talked about the inequalities women have endured throughout history in their pursuit of non-traditional careers. Sarah Baskerville suggested that members spend the summer volunteering, offering them several tips.
