United Way organizations in both Vance and Granville counties are linked with the Communities in Schools of North Carolina campaign for the third annual Build a Backpack in Walmart stores.

The supply drive begins Saturday and runs through Aug. 31. Economically disadvantaged students in nearly 80 counties will benefit from the campaign.

A “Stuff the Bus” event is planned within the campaign on the weekend of Aug. 2-4, the state’s Tax Free Weekend.

The event includes 144 Walmart stores statewide. When shoppers are exiting Walmart, they are able to donate items purchased into bins for students. The value of items last year was more than $350,000, helping more than 62,000 students in nearly 900 schools.

CISNC is a part of the national Communities in Schools program, the leading dropout prevention organization. Last year, more than 99 percent of high school students in the state remained in school, according to a statement from CISNC.
