College offers at home sustainable agriculture classes

Vance-Granville Community College is offering two new courses for at home sustainable production of vegetables and honey. Both courses are scheduled for Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 12-16 at the main campus in Vance County.

“Eating From Your Backyard” will focus on the process of creating a backyard vegetable garden and will include topics such as raised beds, containers, vertical gardening, soil composition and quality, timing, appropriate vegetable selection, cooking and storage. Barry Barker will instruct the course.

“Beekeeping: Harvesting Honey & Winterization” will focus on preparing bee colonies for winter months.

The course is instructed by Warren County farmer Mike Holland and is a follow-up to his last course, “Beekeeping Basics.” However, no prior experience is required to register.

The cost of each class is $40.
