United Way of Vance County holds planning retreat
Members of United Way of Vance County recently assembled for a planning retreat at the offices of Holden, Knott, Clark, Copley & Hoyle, P.A.
Jill Cox, government relations and communications director for United Way of N.C., attended the retreat to facilitate. She led a discussion on the county’s many assets, which include Kerr Lake, easy access to the Triangle area, Maria Parham Medical Center, Vance-Granville Community College, the Henderson Family YMCA and Perry Memorial Library.
James Edwards, board member, presented on the history of of United Way of Vance County, which received its charter in July 1969. The organization was originally called the Vance County United Fund and has been in existence at least since the 1950s.
Edwards also highlighted the growth of the Vance County United Way and community leaders who had significant involvement with the organization.
After the presentation, board members separated into groups to discuss poverty and how to address low high school graduation rates.
