‘Boot Camp’ for student-athletes

Vance-Granville Community College recently held a “Boot Camp” for student-athletes.

The camp consisted of two days of workshops meant to help the students succeed in academics and in their future careers. Both the VGCC Vanguards and their coaches were in attendance.

Jasmine Hightower, director of student activities and athletics, organized the event.

Arlene Ugbaja, director of transfer services at N.C. Central University, spoke about transferring to a four-year college.

Twanna Jones, executive director of Area Christians Together in Service, and Linda Weaver, chair of the ACTS board of directors, gave a joint presentation on community service opportunities.

Jen Hall of Orthopedic Specialists of N.C. gave a presentation on her role as an athletic trainer for the Vanguards.

Presentations were also given by Kali Brown, VGCC director of financial aid; Dr. Tolokun Omokunde, coordinator of the VGCC Male Mentoring Program; Tim MacNeil, assistant coordinator for the VGCC Academic Skills Center; and Linda Fletcher, VGCC director of career services.
