Red poinsettias were placed on each table during the Christmas fellowship meal for The Daisy Garden Club on Dec. 17 at the Mayflower Restaurant.

Barbara Carroll, president, presided. The group sang “Joy To The World,” followed by a prayer offered by Theretha Davis and a Christmas litany by Bernice Price.

Members were quizzed on the subject of Christmas by Edith Carroll. The Rev. Gordon Marshall and Patricia Banks, the two winners, each took home a gift.

Vivian Bullock presented a program on the daisy: These sweet flowers have many petals surrounding a flat center. Little girls often use them to play “He loves me, He loves me not.” They have come to symbolize innocence, purity and simplicity, as well as fidelity, loyalty in love, patience and beauty.

Afterward, Theretha Davis, Naomi Dixon and Velma Steed were presented an arm bouquet of silk daisy flowers by Barbara. (These three individuals are at least 80 years old and are active members of the state garden clubs of the North Carolina Federation of Garden Clubs). On behalf of Mary Armstrong, president of the federation, Vivian Bullock, 1st vice president, presented them each a certificate of appreciation. Gertrude Stitt Bullock, Henrietta Clark, Dorothy Cushenberry and Carolyn Green (all absent) were also recipients.

Calling it an “All Around Arrangement,” Velma Steed described the steps she took in creating her Christmas arrangement: 1) she chose a suitable container; 2) she soaked the oasis and stabilize it with floral tape during its construction; 3) she employed shrubs from her own yard. She began the process with a bed consisting of acuba, flat cedar, nandina blooms and boxwood greenery. According to Steed, this arrangement would be suitable for a dinner table or coffee table for Christmas or even after the holidays.

Vivian Bullock gave out door prizes to those attending. Then Edith Hare blessed the meal before members proceeded to eat.

Members sang “Happy Birthday” to Patricia Banks.

The Rev. Gordon Marshall adjourned the fellowship with prayer.

Special guests in attendance included: Vivian Cooper, Lonnie Davis Jr., Sandra Dixon, Shavonne Foster, Edna Hargrove, Andrew Jackson, Byron Johnson, the Rev. Gordon Marshall, Sharon Marshall and Dorothy Perry.
