Spring Street Missionary Baptist Church: Breakfast scheduled to honor civil rights leader

The 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Breakfast will take place Monday, at 8 a.m., at Spring Street Baptist Church, 511 Orange St., Henderson. Rho Beta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, in conjunction with Nu Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and other local civic organizations are sponsoring this event.

The Rev. Carson Foster Jones Jr., a fellow fraternity member and a native of Newport News, Va., has been invited to speak.

Jones graduated from Menchville High School in Newport News, Va., and Ferrum College in Ferrum, Va., (earning an associate of arts degree). After serving one tour of duty in the United States Army, he completed work on a bachelor of science degree in governmental administration degree at Christopher Newport College (now Christopher Newport University) in his hometown. Finally, he received a master of Divinity degree from the Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University in 1998.

The Kappa Pi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity initiated him on Dec. 4, 1976, during a ceremony at William and Mary College, Williamsburg, Va.

On May 19, 1992, he entered the ministry and on Aug. 23 of that year, he preached his first sermon. He was ordained less than a year later licensed by Gethsemane. He has served as pastor of the Coley Springs Missionary Baptist Church of Warrenton since May 14, 1999.
