Spring Street Missionary Baptist Church: Sunday to mark King memorial service

On Sunday, at 3:30 p.m., Dr. Roosevelt Alston, pastor of Holy Temple United Holy Church, will preside over a memorial service honoring Dr. Martin L. King Jr. at Spring Street Missionary Baptist Church on Orange Street in Henderson. The public is cordially invited to attend.

Liturgical dancers, essay presentations and musical performances from the Holy Temple UHC Mass Choir will all be part of the program. Dr. Stelfanie Williams, president of Vance-Granville Community College; Ronald Gregory, superintendent of Vance County Public Schools; Dr. Jeanette Floyd, pastor of Dickies Grove Missionary Baptist Church and president of the Vance and Adjacent Counties Ministerial Alliance will also participate.

The Rev. Dorwin L. Howard Sr. has been chosen as the speaker for this event.

A native of Oxford, Howard received his license into the Gospel Ministry in 1979, becoming ordained two years later. He began his first pastorate at the Elijah Grove Baptist Church of Roxboro soon after. He would serve as senior pastor at New Mount Zion Baptist Church of Roxboro for more than 27 years.

Serving as pastor emeritus since his retirement from the pastorate in 2012, he now concentrates on his family, his ministry in education, preaching and public speaking. He is currently in his sixth year as assistant superintendent of Granville County Schools.
