Parade, service to honor King planned in Littleton

Oak Grove Baptist Church of Littleton and Piney Grove Baptist Church of Halifax will present the 2013 Martin Luther King National Day of Celebration on Monday in Littleton.

Dedicated to everyone who participated in, or voted on, elections this past year, area board of elections officials and staff, poll workers, precinct members, volunteers and candidates are all invited to attend.

The eighth annual Martin Luther King Parade in Littleton will step off at 9:30 a.m. near Lakeland Cultural Arts Center on Mosby Avenue in Littleton. Individuals of all ages, as well as school clubs, churches, businesses, and community organizations, have been invited to participate. At 10 a.m., the procession will move down Main Street and end near Piggly Wiggly grocery.

Following the parade, Oak Grove Baptist Church, 10614 U.S. 158, Littleton, will have its the 11th annual Martin Luther King program, at noon, in the Promise Land Sanctuary. Dr. C.E. McCollum will conduct the program.

Martin Luther King service projects for this year include landscaping at the senior citizen center on Oak Street in Littleton, and the collection of paper goods and snacks for System of Care/Families Supporting Families (nonprofit) in Roanoke Rapids to benefit school children ages 5-18 and their families.
