Franklin-Granville-Vance Smart Start recently received a $5,000 grant from P&G Pet Care.

The money, made possible through one of the pet care provider’s Live, Learn and Thrive initiatives, will benefit the nonprofit organization’s Reach Out and Read program. The purpose of the evidence based literacy program is to promote early literacy and school readiness in the pediatric practice setting. The purchase of over 2,000 additional books for the program will be made possible with this assistance.

As of now, N.C. Pediatrics Associates offers this program through its offices in Henderson, Oxford, Butner and Louisburg. The Franklin County Health Department does so as well. Pediatricians at these facilities, while parents and their children are in the exam room, can encourage parents to read aloud to their children every day, offering them tips on literacy and presenting the child with a new book.
