Vance-Granville Community College recently received a $20,500 grant from the N.C. Community College System’s Minority Male Mentoring Program to support program efforts at the college.

The program aims to increase graduation rate and the rate at which students transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

Students in the program receive training in leadership, character building, academic skills, financial aid literacy and career exploration. They are provided various opportunities to visit four-year colleges and universities and to meet with presenters during monthly campus meetings.

A “coaching” model was also recently adapted at Vance-Granville, where students have one-on-one sessions with college faculty and staff to help them set academic goals and make the most of advising and tutoring services.

The program is open to all currently-enrolled students at the college, but focuses on minority males.
