‘Tis the season for greetings
On Nov. 18, Walmart customers were greeted by members of both S.H.A.D.E.S Social Club (the Speech, Hearing and Developmental Educational Society), as well as the Red Velvet Social Club (Recognizing Each Disability Vividly Exceeding Limits w/Visions Exemplifying Truth). Club members received smiles and warm responses in return throughout the day. Established in 1995, the prime objective of S.H.A.D.E.S. — whose members include (right, from left) Tymica Bell (president), Vanessa Perry (vice president), Vera Perry (treasurer), P. R. Cynthia Bullock, Sharon Harris and Kathy Bullock — is to assist people with special needs. (Not pictured: Angie Terry, secretary; and Sylvia Marrerro.) The club has sponsored senior citizens, prom, youth and fund raising activities throughout Vance County. Meanwhile, originally organized in 1988, founder, Laura Owens, and co-founder, Shirlina Burwell, started the club to support the United Negro College Fund: it ran through 1992. The club was re-introduced back into the community in 2009 to advocate for individuals with special needs. Members, such as (lower right, from left) Owens, Sheila Sills (vice president), Sara Parham and Martha Hammie (secretary), awards scholarships and sponsors donations for activities, bereavement funds and fund raising.
