Grant applications are currently being accepted by the recently established Frances Abbot Burton Powers Fund.

Powers was a native of Henderson who passed away in 2012. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church and was a member of the first Girl Scouts troop in Henderson.

The endowment will make grant funds available for government entities and nonprofit organizations in Henderson seeking to benefit the area.

It was established through the North Carolina Community Foundation, a statewide community foundation that currently sustains 1,200 endowments. The organization has made nearly $74 million in grants since its formation in 1988.

Grants from the Powers fund will range from $5,000 to $15,000 and will be awarded by a board of advisors.

Grant applications are available at, under “Affiliates/Vance County,” and will be accepted through July 18.
