Students selected for American Legion programs
Seven Vance County high school students were selected to attend the American Legion Boys State and Girls State leadership programs.
The Boys State program selectees are Justin Care, Ray Cheever and Jacob Wiggins of Northern Vance and Jonathan Carlock of Southern Vance.
The Boys State program covers the role of a franchised citizen. Training involves city, county and state governments operated by students who are elected to the various offices. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus and recreational programs.
Care is the son of Jonathan and Tammy Care of Henderson, Cheever the son of Chris and Suzanne Cheever of Henderson, Wiggins is the son of Frank and Sandra Wiggins of Henderson and Carlock the son of Richard Carlock of Henderson.
Northern Vance student Niyah Sneed and Southern Vance students Trakia Fields and Kendra Simmons were chosen to participate in the Girls State program at Catawba College in Salisbury. The program involves leadership seminars and information about local and state government.
Sneed is the daughter of Kimali Sneed of Henderson. Fields is the daughter of Tracy and Angela Fields of Henderson, and Simmons is the daughter of Bryan and Carol Simmons, also of Henderson.
