Pride of Vance Elks agree to volunteer at men’s shelter
As a community project, members of Pride of Vance Elks Lodge No. 1263 recently decided to volunteer at the Henderson/Vance Men’s Shelter (in the basement of the First Presbyterian Church on Chestnut Street. In addition to working the evening shift, the lodge has also agreed to prepare meals for residents at the facility.
Erskine L. Hawkins, a regular volunteer at the shelter and Elk member, first brought the idea to the attention of the lodge. On Nov. 14, several members received training from Joel Rice and Charles Turrentine Jr. for volunteer work at the shelter. These included Teldron Allen, Benjamin Edwards, Erskine Hawkins, Johuntas Hawkins, Cedric Hinton, Eric Seward, Jameel Williams, Thomas Williams and Ronald Lowery.
Elks members are challenging area social clubs and nonprofits to send volunteers to and prepared meals for shelter residents. Williams, exalted ruler, has expressed interest in having the Badd Boyz Club, of which he is a member, become involved.
Donation boxes for collecting supplies for the men’s shelter will be set up at the lodge. Needed items (including cash, toiletries, cleaning supplies, plastic ware and other kitchen items, and coffee) may be dropped off any Friday or Saturday evening that the lodge is open. Otherwise, donations may be made by calling Lowery at (252) 432-1695 or (252) 492-6046.
