US Department of Agriculture: ‘StrikeForce’ initiative coming to North Carolina
North Carolina will be among the 10 additional states chosen by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to launch its “StrikeForce” initiative.
The goal of the initiative is to promote partnership between the department and governments on the state and local levels, as well as community organizations, toward job creation and economic development in poverty stricken areas.
According to Tom Vilsack, agriculture secretary, community leaders have often viewed the application and review processes put in place by the department for its grant and loan programs as imposing. Therefore, the capital necessary to affect change has been lacking.
By identifying census tracts with more than 20 percent poverty to pinpoint hard-hit areas, the department can assist community officials by increasing awareness of and building participation in its programs. In addition that direct lending through the Farm Service Agency toward projects in areas identified through StrikeForce has increased.
