College celebrates cultural diversity

Vance-Granville Community College recently held its annual cultural fair in the civic center on the colleges main campus in Vance County.

The event, staged by the college’s global awareness committee, highlights a diverse group of cultures from around the world.

The event began with a ceremony based on West African traditions.

Students and instructors set up various displays offering information about clubs, academic programs, history and more.

Choirs from the campuses in Vance and Granville counties presented gospel programs. A guitar and vocal quartet performed popular songs from Australia.

There was also line dancing, Middle Eastern dancing and a drum performance by ethnomusicologist Bisi Adelek, a fourth-generation praise drummer from Nigeria.

Students visited educational booths displaying artifacts, crafts, artwork, clothing, food and other items.

Also, a quiz bowl was also held to test students’ knowledge of world culture and current events. The winning team consisted of Katie Kester, Savannah Lynch, Morgan McFalls and Trey Wright.
