Listening

Positive parental communication can help prevent youth from taking that first drink, smoke or pill, it can also be effective in halting drug use among youth who have begun experimenting. When children feel like the important adults in their lives are listening, they are more likely to listen in return. When communicating with your teen or tween:

• Be open

• Be aware of your body language

• Practice patience/demonstrate respect/don’t interrupt

• Watch your tone

• Ask follow-up questions

• Remind your child of your expectations

• Close on a positive note
