When parents no longer love each other …

In an age appropriate way, parents should let children know why they are separating or getting a divorce. It’s important that children not entertain fantasies that their parents may reunite. They should be given the opportunity to express their painful emotions so that they can feel listened to and cared for. Otherwise they may feel guilty or hold themselves responsible. Such feelings can be corrected when they are brought out in the open. Children need to believe that both parents still love them, and that it’s okay to love both parents.
