College to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Vance-Granville Community College is holding a celebration for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. in the civic center on the main campus in Vance County.

The celebration will include a competition for which students will prepare speeches, poems, plays, paintings and more in response to a given topic related to Martin Luther King Jr. A panel of judges will award cash prizes to the top three participants.

The program will also include inspirational music and remarks by Roberta Scott, the schools adult high school diploma coordinator, who participated in the 1963 March on Washington.

The master of ceremonies will be Blondelle Edgerton, the Workforce Investment Act director at the school. Edgerton attended the 50th anniversary of the march.

The celebration is free and open to the public.

Non-perishable food items will be collected at the event for charitable donation.
