Members of the Nu Chi Omega and Rho Tau Omega chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. recently hosted the 2014 Emerging Young Leaders Community Youth Summit at Red Bud Baptist Church in Henderson.

The summit was free and open to youth in grades six through eight.

The theme was “Empowering Our Youth for Global Leadership.” The summit was meant to provide a platform for young people to network with each other while addressing issues they commonly face.

Sarah Baskerville greeted and registered participants. Dorothy Perry opened the summit by stating the purpose, and Dr. Linda Mason and Chelsa Jennings conducted a team-building activity.

Officer Bryan Simmons conducted a bullying workshop, and Kendra Davis conducted a leadership workshop.

A panel discussion moderated by Leeza Mason was held.

Parents attended workshops held by Dr. Priscilla Chavis-Lockley, Nekisha Williams and Harvey Reid that addressed self-esteem, leadership skills, financial matters and the transition from middle school to high school.

Door prizes were awarded, and refreshments were served.

Audrey Davis closed the summit by thanking everyone who participated.

In total, 35 youth and parents, along with 19 chapter members, attended the summit.
