The One Step Above Reading Club at Carver Elementary recently held its 12th annual luncheon to close out the club year.

The guest speaker was Linda Smith of Vance County Schools. Smith spoke to club members about how reading relates to vocabulary, imagination and speaking fluency.

Shelton Robinson Jr. received the Top Reader of the Year Award during the event, and Kyren Bradberry and Yanira Hameric were named the Second-Best Reader and Third-Best Reader, respectively.

Special guests in attendance were Vivian LeMay Bullock, Dorothy Perry, Jody Log, Nicki Bradberry, Yaomine Henderson and Carver principal David Westbrook.

The goal of the club is to enhance the reading abilities of members through word games, oral reading, discussions, summaries and daily reading practices.

During the year, club members participated in short holiday skits, visited a nursing home and held several reading contests.
