Falkner discusses love of library during meeting in November

Susan Falkner, vice president of the board of directors of Friends of the Perry Memorial Library, was the guest speaker for the November meeting of the Henderson Business and Professional Women’s Club.
Falkner received her masters in education from North Carolina State University, taught at Kerr-Vance Academy, Eaton Johnson Middle School and Southern Vance High School. She has served as a docent at the North Carolina Museum of Art since her retirement. At the meeting, she said that she had three loves: travel, art appreciation, and now the library.
The Friends of the Library recently provided funds for cleaning of the carpets and portraits of the Perry Family, who were responsible for establishing the library. The Friends’ annual book sale recently raised between $6,000-$7,000. More than 1,000 books were donated for the sale, some of which were provided by the library. The Friends and volunteers spent all of September sorting and categorizing the books for the sale.
The library recently expanded its collection of books on tape and audio books, and has acquired some play-away viewers. A Nook color reader was given as a prize to the winner of the summer reading program. Other recent programs offered by the library included its annual story telling program, Afternoon with an Author, and a reception featuring the pictures of the late Ruth Russell.
Most recently, the library expanded its days of operation to seven days a week. This move was partially funded by a legacy from the late Bennett Perry. Falkner urged library users to visit on Sundays to ensure continued access.
Following the presentation, members and guests enjoyed dinner, which included banana pudding for dessert. Members were asked to bring some canned goods, cleaning supplies and other articles needed by Area Christians Together in Service and Heart’s Haven. Kathy Taylor, president-elect of the club, delivered donations to Area Christians Together in Service.
Gloria Watkins will be celebrated as the Library Friend of the Year on Thursday in Winston-Salem.
The Henderson Business and Professional Women’s Club meets on the third Thursday of each month in the Foundation Board Room at Maria Parham Medical Center at 6:30 p.m. For reservations, call (252) 438-6732.
