Henderson Institute plans 38th reunion
The former Henderson Institute will celebrate its 38th annual school reunion Friday and Saturday at Kerr Lake Country Club.
Registration will begin Friday from 6 to 9 p.m., with meet-and-greet activities continuing until 11 p.m.
Registration will resume Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. The annual alumni banquet will begin at 5:30 p.m. Dancing will be from 9 p.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday.
The evening banquet program is being planned by the Class of 1964. Class speakers for the occasion will be Dr. Dorothy Lewis Powell and Dr. Johnny B. Alston, both natives of Henderson who currently live in Durham.
Powell spent the majority of her professional career in nursing education and served most recently at Duke University School of Nursing. At Duke, she founded the Office of Global and Community Health Initiatives in 2006 and was associate dean until her retirement June 30 as professor emeriti.
Alston has been chairman of the department of theater and dance at North Carolina Central University since 1996. He is an actor and director and has participated in nearly 20 stage productions since 2009 at the university.
