Good character encouraged ‘Piece By Piece’

School counselor Jameka Floyd is leading a good character education program at New Hope Elementary School that focuses on puzzle pieces.

One character trait, sometimes two, is chosen each week, and when students are seen by staff exhibiting the week’s trait, they receive a puzzle piece with their name on it.

Then, each Friday, Floyd rewards each student who has received a puzzle piece during the week with a certificate.

Floyd adds each puzzle piece to a large board in the school’s main hallway, known as the “Piece By Piece” board.

Teachers also have smaller puzzle boards in their classrooms.

At the end of the each month, one student from every class is honored as a "Character Builder of the Month,” and Floyd presents them with achievement certificates, Pizza Hut coupons, bracelets and pencils.
