Jody Long, a first-year media teacher, was recently selected as the recipient of the Carver Elementary Golden Apple Award.

Recently, she challenged her fifth-grade students by asking them questions that they could only answer through extensive research. Many of the students have taken up the challenge with enthusiasm. Their subsequent efforts have stimulated their curiosity and desire to learn. This in turn has translated in better performance on classroom assignments.

Since she came on board, she has transformed the school library into an ideal place to relax while reading a book, hearing a story read aloud or viewing a movie.

Long previous experience includes work at other area schools, as well as the library at First Baptist Church.

The award was instituted in 2004 as a way to recognize teachers and staff members who give an extra effort to help students meet their potential. Marion Perry, a volunteer at the school, sponsors the award through Tokens of Love, a community service program.
