Free community concert Friday night
Highly-trained older elementary and high school singers will give a free community concert Friday evening in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church in Henderson.
The Meistersingers of the Lenoir-Rhyne Youth Chorus will perform in the sanctuary beginning at 7:30 p.m. It is the group’s first stop on a four-city tour through Monday.
The chorus is in its 17th year, founded and directed by Florence Jowers, a professor of organ at Lenoir-Rhyne University. Freda Harrell will accompany. They have had past concerts in a festival in England and Paris.
Their repertoire includes Brahms, Haydn and Holst, as well as spirituals, folk songs and pieces by John Rutter, Herbert Sumsion and Dan Forrest. One piece will be in memory of the children killed in Newtown, Conn.
