Emari Fleming, Tom Mckoon, Mykel Williams, of Northern Vance High School, and Deon Smith, of Southern Vance High School, were selected to participate in the 2013 Tar Heel Boys’ State and Girls’ State programs this summer.

Fleming attended the Tar Heel Girls’ State program. Smith, Mckoon and Williams attended the Tar heel Boys’ State program.

The Girls’ and Boys’ State programs, sponsored by the American Legion, are designed for high school juniors. Participants attend a week-long residential camp and attend several workshops in which they study principles of government at the city, county and state levels.

Objectives of the program include: to improve citizenship for present and future generations of Tar Heels; to develop civic leadership and pride in American citizenship; to arouse an interest in the detailed study of our government; to arouse in young citizens a determination to maintain the form of government; and to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation.
