DeWitt serves up Christmas ‘scattered, smothered and covered’

Dec. 04, 2012 @ 07:28 PM

Joyce DeWitt of TV’s Three’s Company will play a Waffle House waitress in the Christmas musical comedy, “A Scattered, Smothered & Covered Christmas,” for four performances next week at the Royal Palace Theatre on I-95 in Roanoke Rapids.
Local celebrities will join her on stage, including Tia Bedwell, Brady Martin, Will Cox, Linda Casper-Clarke, Melvin Poythress, Jonathan O’Geary and Andy Dickerson, along with a children’s chorus made up kids from six surrounding counties.
Proceeds from the show will go toward reducing the $20 million debt still owed on the theater and for the revitalization of Roanoke Rapids’ downtown district.
The story unfolds in a Tennessee Waffle House on Christmas Eve as people of all different walks of life are getting snowed in for the night. DeWitt plays the part of Rita, a waitress who the audience soon discovers is actually dead but caught somewhere between life and the afterlife. She has been charged with the task of handing out good deed assignments to people who must perform them before they can move on.
The play was written in 2004 by Henderson native and theatre manager, Kaine Riggan. Randy Travis, T. Graham Brown and other Nashville songwriters wrote the music for this show. N.C. composer Jennifer Prince herself penned a black gospel number for the show, called “Packed Up, Prayed Up and Ready To Go.”
Performances begin Dec. 11 at 7 p.m., and continue Dec. 13-14, at 7:30 p.m. each night, with a special matinee (half price for seniors) on Dec. 13 at 3 p.m. Regular price for tickets is $25 and may be purchased 24 hours a day at the theater, by phone at (252) 536-5577 or online at RoyalPalaceTheatre.com.
Teachers and their families pay only $7 for the Dec. 11 performance, which has been underwritten by the State Employee’s Credit Union as a Teacher Appreciation Performance.
DeWitt will be available after each performance in the lobby to sign autographs and greet ticketed guests.
