StoryCorps founder, process subjects discussed by Sorosis Club
On April 18, 13 members attended the Sorosis Club meeting, hosted by Betty Brand and Marylaura Mckoon. A dessert course was served to those present.
Betty Brand, vice president, conducted the business session. The minutes were read and approved, followed by the treasurer’s report.
Barbara Madigan presented a program on the book, “Listening is an Act of Love” by Dave Isay, the founder of StoryCorps. Over the past two decades, his radio documentary work has earned him several broadcasting awards, including five Peabody Awards, two Robert F. Kennedy Awards and two Livingston Awards for Young Journalists.
To participate in StoryCorps, you make an appointment to visit a recording booth with any one person accompanying you (a relative or a friend). A facilitator will take you into the booth and record the questions you ask of the other person for the next 40 minutes.
You will receive a CD recording of session; another copy will be archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress so that your descendants can hear their ancestor’s voices. Excerpts of interviews are broadcast each Friday on NPR’s Morning Edition.
This program concluded this year’s theme of “People & Their Stories.”
The club will meet again May 16 with Roxanne Fleming as hostess.
