On March 11, the Vance County Board of Commissioners presented the Vance County Community Hero Award to the Northern Vance High School engineering team.

In February, the team won the statewide Prize for Innovation competition that was conducted by the N.C. State University Institute of Emerging Issues. The team’s entry was a Sirocco computer cleaner. Fitted over the computer housing, it is able to vacuum out dust and other particles that impede the machine’s performance. The team received $5,000 for the first place finish.

The award was presented to team members on hand, along with a $25 gift certificate, by Tommy Hester, chairman of the Board of Commissioners. During the presentation, he mentioned that the team faced competition from teams from N.C. School of Science and Math in Durham, Durham Hillside High School and Havelock High School, among others.

The prize money will be used by the team to hire a consultant to develop the cleaner.
