Community garden funding available in Granville County

Aug. 29, 2013 @ 08:29 AM

Grant funds are available for a community garden in Granville County.

The funds are from Nourishing North Carolina, a collaboration between Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina and N.C. Recreation and Parks Association with the goal of supporting or establishing community gardens in all North Carolina counties by the end of 2013.

The program aims to address high obesity rates in North Carolina by providing funding for areas where community members can gather, garden and learn about healthy eating hands-on.

Since its beginning in 2011, the program has provided funding to nearly 20 counties.

Gardens can bring community members together in a number of ways. With the help of funding from Nourishing North Carolina, Brunswick County youth took a cooking class using food from their garden, a library in Buncombe County is sponsoring a children’s reading hour once a week in their community garden and Jones County community members held a one week summer gardening camp.
