Vance County Learning Center, a 501 c 3 nonprofit educational organization, located in downtown Henderson, recently re-submitted its charter application to the N.C. Department of Education.

Informational community meetings concerning the future Deonte Malik Judkins Public Charter School have been scheduled for the following date:

• Wednesday, 6-7 p.m. — Perry Memorial Library, 205 Breckenridge St., Henderson;

• Jan. 28, 5:30-6:45 p.m. — Warrenton Library, 119 S. Front St., Warrenton; and

• Feb. 4, 6-7 p.m. — Richard H. Thornton Library, 210 Main St., Oxford.

Interested students, parents and educators from the Tri-County area are invited to attend one of these sessions. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Deryl von Williams and her team of volunteers and retired teachers.

Charter schools serve as an alternative to public schools for students who apply. Qualified students are chosen by lottery. Parents or guardians concerned about their middle or high school teen underachieving in over-crowded classrooms or are just interested in a more self-paced learning experience should consider attending.
