Non-counseling based support group set to meet

Dec. 26, 2012 @ 11:40 PM

The Family Issues Peer Support Group for Adults will conduct its first sessions Jan. 7 and Jan 10.

This is a free, open support group to educate and help individuals who are dealing with family challenges by providing resource information and the opportunity for sharing in a supportive environment with peers.

Participation in the group does not involve counseling. Anyone in need of professional counseling services should contact the local mental health authority at 1-877-619-3761.

Individual family members can share and discuss family challenges with those experiencing similar situations in a proactive way. Group members will lend support to other members and help them to cope with challenges.

Teresa Hicks, M.A., will co-facilitate the group along with another peer group member. Despite being a trained educator and counselor, she will be limiting her role with this group to that of a peer.

Weekly meetings will follow the this agenda:

• Welcome

• Silent prayer/reflection

• Group overview and affirmation

• Peer speaker (or guest)

• Group sharing (by all)

• Reflections and closing

Meetings will take place at one of two host sites:

• Maria Parham Medical Center - Center for Rehab, 566 Ruin Creek Road, Henderson — Mondays, starting Jan. 10

• Spiritual Connections Café, 221 S. Garnett St., Henderson — second and fourth Thursday, beginning Jan. 10.

Regardless of the host site, meetings will run from 6-7 p.m.
