Tips from the Vance County Parenting Task Force
Teaching social skills
Teaching social skills can be a major challenge for parents. They normally aren’t there to prompt their child to inhibit impulsive urges, or to stop and think about how to behave with peers.
First, teach and practice these skills with your child at home. Once he has learned the appropriate behaviors, then your task becomes one of encouraging him to use these skills when friends come home to play, and working with teachers and others to foster their use in other large settings.
