April recognized as child abuse prevention month
The Five County Community Collaborative Prevention Committee wishes to make the public aware that April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Every 10 seconds, a case of child abuse is reported. Over 90 percent of the juvenile victims of sexual abuse actually know the perpetrator in some manner.
More than five children die every day as a result of child abuse. Of those, approximately 80 percent of them were not yet four years old.
Child abuse is not restricted to a specific socioeconomic level or level of education. It occurs amongst people of all ethnic, cultural or religious backgrounds.
Some tips that parents can use to prevent child abuse include:
• Monitoring one’s stress level.
• Being cautious of new people that come into the lives of one’s children.
• Evaluating one’s use of substances such as alcohol.
• Maintaining close supervision of one’s children while they are exploring the Internet.
