Untreated sewage discharged behind sewer main in Oxford

On Friday, the City of Oxford reported a discharge of approximately 100 gallons of untreated sewage from a sewer main located on an easement behind 400 West Front St., Oxford, on Jan. 10. Approximately 100 gallons reached an unnamed tributary of Foundry Branch in the Tar-Pamlico Basin. This discharge was caused by debris in the main.

The volume is an estimate based on 10 gpm for 10 minutes.

The line has been restored to service and the creek was damned, cleaned, flushed and pumped back into the sewer system.

Under North Carolina Statutes, Article 21, Chapter 143.215.c, a press release is not required for a spill under 1,000 gallons. However, in an effort to keep the citizens of Oxford informed, the city issues a release regardless of the volume reaching the surface waters of the State.
