Tips from the Vance County Parenting Task Force
Offer an acceptable alternative
Often when young children engage in inappropriate behaviors, they are unable to figure out what to do instead. Children need help finding acceptable outlets for the feelings that are causing them to act inappropriately. If it is an object being misused, pointing out the actual function of the object can redirect behavior by helping the child use it appropriately.
Therefore, when you have to stop a child’s behavior, remember to let them know what they can do instead.
