Book by Huckabee subject of Sorosis Club meeting
Susan Faulkner acted as hostess for the Dec. 13 Sorosis Club meeting, which took place at the Henderson Country Club. A dessert course was served to the 12 members present.
Betty Band, vice-president, conducted the business meeting. The minutes were read and approved by the members. Next, the treasurer’s report was given. Brand reported that members had donated $330 dollars to the Christmas Project. Temple Riddle, family members and Brand used that money to shop for Christmas gifts for the selected family: including bicycles, clothing and other toys.
Marietta Noel introduced the speaker, Jean Lark, who reviewed the book, "A Simple Christmas," by Mike Huckabee. She selected some of the book topics, such as sacrifice and transition, from the 12 stories celebrating the true spirit of Christmas.
As a youngster, Huckabee wanted a guitar, asking for one as a Christmas present. He found one in a J. C. Penny catalogue for $99. His mother and father sacrificed by buying the guitar and making monthly payments.
Huckabee also wrote about initially becoming the pastor of two churches but subsequently feeling that he was meant to pursue other venues. He participated in political races, becoming lieutenant governor and, later, the governor of his home state of Arkansas. He no has his own TV program on Fox News.
Janet White gave out hand-made Christmas gift tags to all members in attendance. The club’s next meeting will take place Jan. 17, with Anna Hannon as hostess.
