Plank Chapel group assembles birthing kits
The United Methodist Women of Plank Chapel United Methodist Church in Kittrell, in partnership with the N.C. Annual Conference Mission Team and the Conference Church and Society Commission, recently assembled 131 birthing kits for the United Methodist Committee on Relief.
Birthing kits, which contain items such as soap, latex gloves, plastic sheeting, and razor blades — all sealed inside a plastic bag — promote a safe, clean birth. These kits will be sent to areas that have high maternal mortality rates, where they may double a mother’s chance of surviving birth.
Kit components were acquired through the United Methodist Women treasury fund and donations made by the Plank Chapel congregation. Once assembled, the kits were blessed and transported to the United Methodist Women’s Annual Conference in Greenville.
The Plank Chapel United Methodist Women and the Plank Chapel congregation undertook this project to help mothers throughout the world have safer, cleaner births.
